Gloucester Cougars Novice A Champions at Leitrim Tournament!
The Gloucester Cougars Novice A team have done it again by winning their second tournament of the year. After making it through the round robin quite handedly, the team faced a tough semi final game against their friendly rivals the Blackburn Stingers and managed to prevail with a 1-0 victory. The finals proved to be even more exiting when the Cougars faced a strong team from Embrun but managed to stay on top with a 6-5 win. It was a great conclusion to a well run tournament – hats off to the organizers, volunteers and the Leitrim Minor Hockey Association who put on a great event.Gloucester Cougars Novice A Finalists at Mirabel, Quebec Tournament!
The Cougars faced their toughest competition of the year in a province wide, 24 team tournament held in Mirabel, Quebec. It was a do or die round robin where the Cougars managed to keep the momentum going through to the quarter finals and semi-finals. The final game was a fantastic spectacle that included a pregame cheerleading sequence, strobe lights, music, and personal introductions. It was a grandiose event and the kids were treated like NHL stars from the moment they entered the rink. With 24 teams competing, the kids, coaches and parents were thrilled to make it to the finals and play against some of the strongest teams in Quebec. Another component of this tournament was a “Show Partisans” contest to determine the most encouraging fans (parents/siblings) with the best spirit. Through the use of costumes, props, encouraging cheers and dances – our Cougar fans won the spirit award! It was a fun-filled weekend for all, creating memories to last a lifetime.Cougars Novice A - Champions at Harold Hamm Tourney!
The Novice A Cougars battled to beat some of the best teams in eastern Ontario and were rewarded as the 2009 Harold Hamm Tournament Champions.
At the outset of this twelve team tournament the Cougars knew they had an extremely tough round robin draw. On Thursday the boys started off with a solid effort tying the talented Kanata Blazers 3-3. They followed this the next day with a hard fought 4-2 win over Stittsville. In the last game of the round robin the Cougars proved that they knew how to play at both ends of the ice. The D-pairings of Josh/Shelton, Sean/Mathieu, combined with great saves from Carter and tenacious backchecking, helped the Cougars shut down the Casselman Predators 8-2.
In the semi-final on Sunday the boys were matched against a very confident and quick team from Alexandria. The boys played one of their best games of the year winning 6-3.
The A-side final was a re-match against the Kanata Blazers (who had gained the single wildcard position for the semis). With Captain Will Cox in the bleachers with an ‘upper body injury’ the remaining forwards came together. The lines of Daniel/Cam/Connor together with Will B./Ethan/Camden took turns scoring goals and then grinding out the third period. Final score: Cougars 5 – Blazers 1. Congratulations Novice A.
Next stop: Ottawa 67’s tourney in December.
